Importance Of Vitamins In Body

Vitamins perform specific and vital functions in the body chemistry. When taken in correct amounts and regularly, vitamins are responsible for good health and vitality, energy, growth and longevity. They are found in small concentrations in foods. With a few exceptions, they cannot be manufactured or synthesized by organisms and their absence or improper absorption results in specific deficiency diseases.

It is not possible to sustain life without all the essential vitamins. In their natural state, they are found in minute quantities in organic foods. We must obtain them from these foods or in dietary supplements. Each of the essential vitamins

has a specific function in the body. However, individually, none of them can work efficiently. They are effective only when they work with one another and in combination with carbohydrates, fats, and proteins that are provided by a nutritious diet. They fight infections, maintain the body’s natural immune system and help in tissue and bone formation.

Vitamins, which are of several kinds, differ from each other in physiological function, in chemical structure and

in distribution in food. They are broadly divided into two categories, namely, fat soluble or water soluble. Vitamins A, D, E and K are all fat soluble vitamins. They are not easily lost by ordinary cooking methods and they can be stored in the body to some extent, mostly in the liver.

Vitamin B complex and C are water soluble. They dissolve easily in cooking water. Heating may actually destroy a portion of these vitamins. They cannot be stored in the body and hence, have to be taken daily in foods. Any extra quantity taken on any one day is eliminated as waste. Used therapeutically, vitamins can be of immense help in treating disease and speeding recovery. They can be used in two ways, correcting deficiencies and treating diseases.
